THE GOLDFIELDS.

[FROM our OWN CORRESPONDENTS.]

; Thames, Friday. Caledonian.—A leading stope is now under way on Rowe's leader at No. 3 level, coming backwards from the winze, and men are also employed in timbering up and preparing the passes for permanent operations. The leader is rather small at present, but shows strong colours of gold at every breaking down, and is undoubtedly payable. As soon as the stope is sufficiently advanced from the winze, and the timbering completed, it is probable the drive will be continued ahead.

Alburnia. —For several days past the men in the stopes have been working away from the junction where the beat grade of quartz was met with awhile back, but notwithstanding this a little picked stone and fair grade ore are coming to hand daily. Sylvia (Tararu).— late heavy rain has been seriously impeding the progress of the contractors in sinking the winze from the surface down to the level now being opened up. From Sunday last up to late on Tuesday they were kept continually baling the surface water out, which had draihed into the winze. Notwithstanding this delay, however, they have made excellent progress far, & depth of fully 60 feet having been attained, and as a rise has been brought up from the level below for a height of 30 feet, there only now remains a depth of 30 feet to sink to effect the desired communication. While this work is in hand the advance of the level is delayed, as the air is too light for working; in, but the winze is expected to improve this state of affairs.
