Very little local cheese entered, but a fair supply of Southern ; there is plenty of demand for prime quality. Good butter is still very scarce, and commands. a high price. Bacon and hams of' good quality move off freely. Honey is in demand. A much larger quantity could" have been sold. Mr. Alexander Aitken's market report for the week ending 25th Augustßusiness has been fairly brisk, receipts of farm produce have not been heavy, consequently stocks on hand were, in most cases, cleared out. Bacon and hams are in better demand: prices a shade better. Butter has declined in value, not in consequence of increased supply, but owing to retailers - having found difficulty in selling to a profit on late prices. Eggs show a further fall, but no further decline is expected, as an outside market has been found temporarily, for surplus receipts were very large. Poultry was entered in unusually large numbers; every pen was filled to excess, and all sold at very satisfactory prices. Pigs were also in large supply, none of. choice sorts,' some sellers requiring more than value : those of fair breeds sold well. Cage birds in food supply; few sold. Potatoes are quiet but firm ; Oamanvs are difficult to sell at cost of landing, owing to Canterbury being sold a& Oainarus. The only kind in demand are good locals, owing to their being kept at a lower rate than Southern. Onions in good supply; demand small, prices firm. Carrots: " Slignt improvement on last week's prices, although double the ruling rates would not pay growers. Cheese: No local coining to hand. Some choice Canterbury entered, met with fair demand, but' the price required was high. Honey in large supply, demand fair, but no large sales can be effected, as sellers require prices which can only be obtained by selling in single tins, or in other words, retail price.
