CONVICTED OF ARSON.

[by telegraph.—press association.] Blenheim, Thursday. The case of arson against John Long alias Henry Long, alias Alexander S. Smith, was concluded at the Supreme Court this afternoon. The prisoner made a statement lasting forty-five minutes, in which he gave his account of how the fire happened, and why he came over here. The jury retired at ten minutes past five, and at five minutes past six returned with a verdict of guilty, adding that they wished to mark their strong sense of disapprobation with the Victoria Insurance Company for the careless manner in which a policy of £400 was allowed to be taken out, that amount being far in excess of the value of the effects in the house. The Courthouse was densely packed when the verdict was brought in, and the ladies gallery was growded. His Honor said the evidence againt the accused was quite convincing and overwhelming. He sentenced him to seven years' penal servitude.
