THE GOLD DISCOVERY AT MANAIA.
RICH RETURN FROM A CRUSHING. Some- time ago we stated that Messrs. Blackmore and Ruffin, who had been prospecting in the Manaia district, between Coromandel and Tapu, had discovered a reef of considerable promise. A crushing of a parcel of six tons has just been completed for them at Messrs. Fraser and Sons' reduction works, and the following is a copy of the result furnished to them :— Herewith we hand you particulars of the six tons gold dirt as sent us for treatment :— Bulk : Assay per ton (22401b)— „ ... oz. dirt. g". £ a. d. Mr. Fraser informs us that if the ore could be treated on the ground by waterpower machinery capable of reducing 300 tons per week, the cost of treatment would not be above 6s per ton. A parcel of 15 tons from the same place, including 401b of specimens, was recently treated at Coromandel by the ordinary battery process, and yielded 970z of sold.
