THE FRENCH ESCAPEES.
[by telegraph.— special correspondent.]
Wellington, Thursday. Ccky, the liberated New Caledonian escapee, was a passenger to Auckland by the s.s. Rotorua this afternoon. Since his release, Cury has been taken care of by M. DeMey, the well-known gymnastic instructor, who has provided his compatriot with a home in his distress. Cury, through the Press, has thanked his protector, and those other citizens of Wellington who have assisted him during his stay here. That Gasparini made away with himself on the trip to Sydney, seems rlow to admit of no doubt. The Commissioner of Police (Major Gudgeon) received a telegram today from the Commissioner of Police in New South Wales, stating that a thorough overhaul had been made of the s.s. Wakatipu without any sign of the convict being found. It is thought by the officials to be now unquestionable that he jumped overboard some hours before reaching Sydney harbour.
