THE GOLDFIELDS.
[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Paeroa, Tuesday. Woodstock (Karangahake). — An interim clean up has taken place at the Ivanhoe battery of Heitman's dirt. The result from 15 tons was 540z bullion, value over 20s per ounce. This is from a rough cleaning of the plates, the boxes not being touched. The balance is now being crushed, and is showing well.
MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Waihi G.M. Co.All available strength is now being applied in the erection of the reduction plant and pumping gear, and that good progress is being made. The contractors for the engine shaft are working in three gangs, and the shaft is down 52 feet. In the No. 1 level the crosscut eastward has not yet cut any vein of importance. The winze in this level is now down 61 feet, the vein is 18 inches wide, and very rich in both gold and silver. Three shifts are at work in this winze in order to connect with No. 3 level. Stoning is being continued in No. 2 level; a good width of payable ore is coming out, and of good quality. In No. 3 level driving is being continued north and south with rich ore in both ends, the reef in the north end being 5 feet wide and in the south end 3 feet 6 inches. Calcining : One of the furnaces was lighted on Thursday with 16 tons Rosemont ore ; by Monday (the 20th) the quartz will be cool enough to draw. So far as can be examined the calcination has been all that was expected. Trenton.—The change of country that has come in the shaft that was mentioned in the letter of Saturday appears to be a heave or break. There is about a foot of clav striking in from the eastern end of the shaft, and dipping westward. Under this clay the country is softer and not quite so blue as it has been. There are also small pieces of quartz in the mullock close to the clay.
WEST COAST GOLDFIELDS. [by TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Greymodth, Tuesday. Joseph Taylor, owner of one of the beach claims, is sending about a ton of black sand to the Melbourne Exhibition as a sample. It was taken out of a newlysunk paddock in the presence of about a dozen gentlemen. Very rich gold was seen on every pebble. A load and a-half taken up is estimated to yield 3oz. Owing to the Grey River being unusually low, men and boys are doing well fossicking amongst the crevices in the rocks in the vicinity of Brunnerton. A payable lead of gold has been struck on Fan-ball's dairy farm within a short distance of town. The claims are working on terms, the stipulation being a 10-per-cent. royalty on the gold, but the owner will not allow any more claims to be worked, though it is thought there is ground enough for hundreds of men. There ie much grumbling in consequence.
