ANSWER TO FRENCH PROTESTS.
VISIT OF SIGNOR CRISPI TO
PRINCE BISMARCK.

Rome, August 19. Signor Crispi, the Italian Premier, in replying to M. Goblet, the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, states that there is no necessity for Italy to notify the Powers of the occupation of Massowah. He accuses France, which has no interest in Massowah, of intervening in favour of Greek residents, with the object of bringing about the present difficulty. Signor Crispi asserts that Italy will defend to the last her interests in the Red Sea, and that Massowah has been annexed in the cause of justice and civilisation. Signor Crispi will proceed to Berlin during tne week for the purpose of interviewing Prince Bismarck with reference to the Italian occupation of Massowah. St. Petersburg, August 19. An envoy of the Negus of Abyssinia has had an interview with the Czar, and has made a formal offer to cede an island in the Red Sea to Russia, provided that the latter Power should agree to send a military instructor to Abyssinia. Constantinople, August 19.
The Porte has instructed the Khedive of Egypt to protest against the annexation of Zulla by Italy.
