MORALS OF STATE SCHOOLS.
[by TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Tuesday. The Times says y "We have received a lefter from a substantial settlor north of Auckland, replying to Mr. Goldie's remarks upon our statements respecting juvenile immorality in the State schools. As the letter in some parts sails rather close to the rock of libel, we must decline to publish it ; but we hold it as evidence that will be used by us when the time comes, and for the present simply quote one paragraph from it. The writer says : ' The details are alike disgraceful to the system and the principal actors in this revolting case. I throw back the challenge to Mr. Goldie, and demand investigation.'" Mr. oldie has forwarded the following reply to that journal:—" In your issue of the 21st, reference is made to a letter said to have been received from a substantial settler, north of Auckland, from which you quote one paragraph to the effect that the writer throws back the challenge to myself, and demands investigation. Now, as I have never given any challenge, and have no knowledge of anything in connection with the public schools of Auckland in the direction of juvenile immorality, I am at a loss to understand to what he refers. If the writer has any such complaint, and will make it to the Board of Education after my return to Auckland, I will promise him that, so far as I am concerned, and I think I may say the same for my colleagues, the fullest enquiry shall be made, and, if proved, steps will be taken to remedy the evil."
