BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon. Mr. J. 11. Upton presided, and Messrs. S. Luke, J. M. Lennox, J. W. Carr, R. Udy, and T. Cooper were present.

Temporary Arrangements.—The Chairman reported that the following temporary arrangements had been made:—Mr. vV. K. C. \\ alker to take charge of the Pnkeno Valley School during the illness of the teacher; Miss Matilda Patterson, pupil teacher, from Wellesley-street to Devoniiort during the illness of pupil teacher ; Mr. vV. Hooper, probationer, to Mount Eden during the absence of the pupil teacher. Presentation ok Diplomas.The Rev. D. Bruce wrote intimating that the presentation of diplomas in connection with the Auckland University would take place on Thursday, the'2.'srd instant, at three p.m., in the Choral Hall, and he invited the members of the Hoard to he present, and also to make arrangements for the attendance of teachers and students interested. It was agreed to acknowledge the invitation, and to arrange with the school committees that those teachers and students who wished to attend might be present at the ceremony. Sewing Teachers.— On the motion of the Chairman, the following resolution was agreed to : —" That the salary of sewing teachers be fixed at the rate of live pounds (£,">) a year, and that clause 59 of the Board's regulations be altered accordingly." . Tenders.—Eleven tenders were received for the removal and re-erection of a school building at Richmond Road, and that of Mr. H. Pitts ( £253) was accepted. Selections ok Litkkatckk. — Messrs. Goodwin, Airey, and Fidler recommended that the following be the selections of literature for the pupil teachers' examinations : — End of first Year : Campbell's " Pleasures of Hope," part 1. ; end of second year, Shakespear's "Julius Ciesar." The recommendation was adopted. Applications.—The following resolutions were agreed to in respect of applications from country committees :—The sum of JL'5 in each case to be contributed towards the cost of shelter sheds at Ararimu and Henderson's Mill schools; half the cost of painting Grafton Road school to be contributed. A number of other minor applications were considered. School Fund Allowances.— Chairman mentioned the question of the school fund allowances to aided schools, and said that a return which had been prepared showed that there were nineteen aided schools, under the control of committees, receiving the usual grant of £5 each, while nine other aided schools, similar in all respects, were not receiving this allowance, because they were not under the control of committees. Mr. Lennox thought that no allowance should be given to any school with an attendance under 15. The further consideration of the subject was deferred. (Queen's Redoubt School. —It was decided to close the Queen's Redoubt School 011 the .'Nth September next. Some routine business was transacted, and the meeting terminated.
