THE THAMES RAILWAY.
[BY telegraph.—OWN correspondent.] Thames, Friday. The public meeting convened for this afternoon by the Mayor to consider Mr. Cadman's telegram re the letting of the completed section of the Thames railway to Mr. Ford, engineer, was fairly attended. In the course of a, discussion it was pointed out that the line was only completed as far as Kopu, although the formation extended to Hikutaia. It therefore could not be profitably utilised under present circumstances, as the traffic between the Thames and Kopu was insufficient to warrant anyone putting on the necessary rolling stock. Eventually the following resolution, moved by Mr. Carpenter, and seconded by Dr. Kilgour, was carried : —"That this meeting, having considered Mr. Cadman's telegram and Mr. Ford's letter, is of opinion that it would be imprudent tor it to interfere at the present juncture, as it might jeopardise the speedy completion of the line. As to Vaile's system, this meeting is nob in a position to express any opinion thereon. Besides this, Mr. Ford's proposition being of such an indefinite nature, this meeting has the recommendation to make that, seeing that the railway is evidently attracting the attention of outside capitalists, our members should be requested to urge the speedy completion of the line."
