[OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Friday. Mr. A. Brodie, County Chairman, has received the following letter from the Public Works Department, Wellington, in answer to a request from the county for assistance in opening up and maintaining goldfield roads and tracks :—"Sir, —l am directed by the Minister for Public Works to acknowledge the receipt of your telegram of 6th inst., asking that your county's application for assistance in the matter of roads and tracks on the Thames goldfields might be borne in mind when the Public Works Estimates are being prepared, and in reply to state that the vote for 'roads on goldfields,' although appearing on the Public Works Estimates, is under the control of the Hon. the Minister for Mines, from whom the Hon. Mr. Mitchelson learns that provision will be made for a portion, at any rate, of the works referred to in your application of 2oth May last, forwarded through Mr. Cadman, M.H.R." [press association.] Wellington, Friday. Mr. R. M. Beetham, an old settler, died to-day, aged 79. A special meeting of the Board of Education was held this morning to consider whether the Minister of Education should be requested to appoint a commission to inquire into the charges of immorality in public schools, as alleged by the Times and Mail. After discussion, it was carried, '' That the Board having examined into the charges of immorality made against our public schools by the New Zealand Times and Mail, is of opinion that there is no foundation whatever for these charges, and therefore no necessity for further inquiry."
