THE RABBIT NUISANCE.
• TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — showing the exceptional treatment we in the Morth receive at the hands of the Government, allow me to give publicity to the following fact—The owner of 15 acres in the Waikato was recently charged £2 13s for destroying rabbits, which were said to be on his land, and received notice that in July or August he would be required, of course with the usual alternative of certain pains and penalties, to continue the work of extermination. The unfortunate owner did what most men would do, sold it for what it would fetch. How differently are the Southern men of influence treated, where we find that the Government have spent thousands of pounds in wire fencing, and over £8000 in introducing ferrets, stoats, &c., which will be a fearful plague in a few years, for as soon as they have eaten all the rabbits they will doubtless give their attention to the lambs.— I am, &c., James Burtt.
