Kiwi Claim (Brothers Creek.)—;A 1-ton trial parcel from this claim is now in course, of treatment a 1; the Moanataiari battery, and a fair yield is expected. Newbeky-Vautin Works.—Dr. Scheidel and Mr. Spratc are now engaged in preparing plans for a few slight alterations in the structure of the old LaMonte building, in order to make it suitable for the erection of the Newbery-Vautin plant. These will be completed this week, and tenders invited for the carrying out of same on Monday. Saxon.—At No. 3 level the drive on the hangingwall reef is being steadily advanced, with the reef showing a size of about 18 inches. Colours of gold are seen at every breaking down, with an occasional pound or two of picked stone, about three pounds being obtained yesterday. The drive on the footwall reef has been at a standstill for some days past, to allow of it being timbered and properly secured, the ground about here being very heavy, and requiring great attention. Three stopes are in progress overhead, the reef showing an average width of 12 inches, and yielding a good class of quartz. There is no change to report in any of the stopes above No. 4 level, where the usual operations are being continued. The stopes on No. 1 footwall leader have not yet communicated with the crosscut put in from No. 3 level, but the two separate workings must now be very close to each other. The drive at No. 5 level is now in a distance of about 144 feet from the shaft. The new body of quartz met with last week is evidently No. 3 reef, and only about a foot of sandstone separates it from No. 2 reef. In breakingdown the latter body yesterday, which is six inches in thickness, strong colours of gold were seen in the quartz, and an excellent class of mineral prevailed. [by telegraph—own correspondents.] Thames, Friday. At the School of Mines, this evening, Professor Brown, of Auckland, delivered an instructive lecture upon the facilities afforded this district for testing purposes by the existence of the Thames School of Mines, and dwelt upon the various methods for the treatment of ores. In concluding, the lecturer thought pressure should be brought to bear upon the Government for assistance in rendering the testing plant lately erected in connection with the school, available for public experimental purposes. Cambria. — The mine manager reports under date 19th instant, that cleaning-up and retorting took place yesterday, for the following returns :—l7 loads of quartz from winze on main reef intermediate level, 19 ounces of gold; 18J loads of tailings put through the berdans, 7 ounces 12 dwts; 15 pounds picked stone, 15 ounces 10 dwts; 16 loads taken from quartz debris in intersecting main reef in tee drive, No. 4 level, 2 ounces 5 dwts : total retorted, 44 ounces 7 dwts; melted gold, 44 ounces.
