MR. LARNACH AND THE CIVIL SERVICE.
[BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Monday. On Saturday night the Hon. W. J. M. Larnach entertained about thirty heads of departments in the Civil Service at the Parliamentary Buildings, in view of his approaching departure for Melbourne. He stated in his speech that his object in doing so was to express his high esteem for them. It was not popular to speak well of the Civil Service at the present time, but he hoped it would have a more prosperous future before it than was now looming. He would not have invited them together if he had not been going away, as his action might have been misconstrued ; but as he was leaving the colony he desired to express his personal esteem and goodwill towards them. Mr. Larnach left this evening by the Tarawera for Melbourne.
