BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board of Education met yesterday, thcro being present:— Messrs. Upton (chairman), Cooper, Lennox, Can , , and Udy. Chairman's Report.—The chairman reported that in consequence of tho Ruapuke householders failing- to elect a school committee, the Board had proceeded to appoint a, commissioner for the district. The resignations of Miss Jessie M. Murray, pupil teacher, Waiotahi Creek School, and Mr. F. Jessup, probationary pupil teacher, Newton West School, had been received. Mr. W. J. Wornham had been appointed temporarily to the Nelson-street School. Mr. .J. l>. Roekliffhad been authorised to employ an assistant teacher at the Driving Creek School, and instructions had been given to Mr. J. S. Colhoun to teach Churchill and Rangiriri schools three davs a week each. The following teachers had been requested to assist in supervising the examination of pupil teachers and candidates for employment at Auckland: —Messrs. Worthington, DratKn. Carter, Grierson, and Wells; Misses Westwood, McLeod, Airey, Wallis, Beale, and Grant. This report was adopted. Training College Visiting Committk.k.— The Training College Visiting Committee made the following recommendations: — Appointments of teachers: 1. Coromandcl : That eft'ect be given to the recommendation of the District School Committees for the appointment of Mr. A. J. Littcn as head teacher. 2. Waiotahi: That effect be given to the recommendation of tho District .School Committee for the appointment of Mr. W. H. V. Hall as assistant master of the Waiokaraka School, Mr. Alfred Oldliam to take his place as assistant at Waiotahi Creek School. Head-teachers' reports : That paragraph 3 of clause 40 of the Board's regulations be altered by striking out the last sentence, and inserting in lieu thereof the following; words : li This report is confidential to the Board." On the motion of the chairman, the report was adopted. School-books. —The following letter from the Education Department was read : —" I am instructed by the Minister of Education to inform you that his attention has been directed by parents in nearly all parts of tho colony to the inconvenience to which they are subject through the frequent introduction of new school-books, and that he has been asked in Parliament to take this matter into consideration. 1 am to ask whether your Board has exercised, or deems it desirable to exercise, its authority for the purpose of restricting the freedom of teachers with respect to the choice of books. The authority I refer to is conferred by the iirst words of the Order-in-Couneil relating to schoolbooks, Gazette, July 7, 18S7. The Minister would be glad to receive from your Board any statement or suggestion it may be disposed to make upon this question.— W. J. Habens." Mr. Lennox said that the Board had only once changed the books. The Chairman said that the Board had now f>, set of class-books, which they did not propose to change for many years, and it was decided to reply accordingly. Miscellaneous.—lt was decided to declare the boundaries of the Avondale school district. The Board agreed to contribute a certain sum on behalf of repairs, etc., proposed at the Helensville school. It was resolved to grant £1 for every £1 collected by the Opotiki committee on behalf of the school library. A request for the enlargement of the Opua school was declined, and an application for the erection of a teacher's house at Waimate was also refused, on the ground that the Board had no funds for the work. A number of minor applications from committees were dealt with.

Applications fob New Schools;.—An application for the re-opening of a new school near Miranda was declined. The Board received a request from Tangihua that a school be opened there, and this was referred to Mr. Fidler. Teachers. —Appointments of teachers were dealt with as follows :—Pakuranga: The names of Messrs. Gillies, Hill, and Tanner to be forwarded to the committee. Upper Waihou : Miss Slator was appointed. Wnangamarino : The vacant position to be offered to Mr. Caley, should his health permit. Mareretu: Miss Devine was appointed. Waitaugi: The committee to be consulted respecting the appointment of Mr. Worsley. Katikati: Miss Keesing's name to be sent to the committee.
