London, May 27. A consignment of apples per the s.s. Rimutaka sold at an average price Of 8s 6d per case.

MR. GLADSTONE AND THE LICENSING QUESTION. London, May 27. Mr. Gladstone, speaking on the provisions of the Local Government Bill, strongly condemned the payment of compensation to publicans for forfeited licenses. Such a principle, he asserted, would be unbearable in practice, ana its effect would be to convert a publican's license into an estate. Government would only be able to carry the proposals through the House by the servile support of the Unionists.

RAILWAY TO SALONICA. Constantinople, May 27. The railway line from this city to Salonica is now open for traffic.

FORGERY OF BANK NOTES. Paris, May 28. Successful forgeries of 500fr. notes on the Bank of France have been discovered.
