DEATH OF MR. H. A. WATT.

A widespread feeling of regret was felt on Saturday when it became known that a cablegram had been received from Rio do Janeiro announcing the death of Mr. 11. A. Watt, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch. He had received leave of absence from the Bank to tako a trip Home for the benefit of his health, which had never been good, and had latterly given grave cause for anxiety. When it became known in Christchurch, where Mr. Watt was very popular, that ho intended going Home, he was presented with a complimentary address and a Eurse of sovereigns. He left New, Zeamd by the Rimutaka, which sailed from Wellington. While in that port his state was so critical that a cable code was arranged with Mr. Tolhurst, the manager of the bank at Wellington, by which ho could keep his friends informed of his condition. On Saturday a cablegram was received from Rio, announcing that Mr. Watt had died on the voyage to that port. Mr. Watt, who was suffering from consumption, came out to this colony in the Rotorua, cm her first voyage from Glasgow, about ten years ago. The change benefited him greatly, ancl it was hoped that a permanent euro had been effected. Latterly, however, his health again gave way seriously, and it was in hopes that a trip home might benefit him that he left by the Rimutaka. Mr. Watt received his early training in the North of Scotland Bank. 6n coming out here he was appointed general ledgerkeeper, and soon afterwards was made accountant. Five years ago he was made manager of the bank in Christchurch, where his hearty and genial disposition soon made him as general a favonrito as he had been in Auckland. He leaves a wife and three children, for whom very great sympathy will be felt.
