THE PACIFIC CABLE.

Sydney, April 20. The surveying ship Egeria, which sailed yesterday for Auckland, is to survey the new cable route, which it is understood will be from Sydney to the extreme north of New Zealand, and thence to British Columbia. leprosy~in~sydney. Sydney, April 20. A Chinaman living in the heart of the city was found to-day suffering from leprosy, and was taken to the leper house. . BANK DIVIDEND. Melbourne, April 20. The City of Melbourne Bank has declared a dividend for the half-year of per cent. QUEENSLAND SUGAR CROP. Brisbane, April 20. Thirty-eight thousand tons of sugar have been exported since last May.

H.M.S. UNDINE. Sydney, April 20. The Undine was sold for £1500 to a Melbourne firm of contractors.

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY.

Sydney, April 20. Professor Leversige, of the Sydney University, reports that the Senate suggests the dispensing with the formal matriculation examination, except in medicine, science, and engineering.

THE CHINESE QUESTION. Sydney, April 20. Sir H. Parkes considers that, as far as this colony is concerned, there is no further need to inquire into the Chinese question, as an ultimatum has already been forwarded from the home authorities.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GOVERN-

MENT POLICY.

Adelaide, April 20. The Chief Secretary, addressing the electors, enunciated that in the Government policy it was intended to ask for a half million loan, a Bill to be introduced imposing on the Chinese a poll tax in the Northern territory (retrospective); also a Bill empowering the colony to join the Federal Council, to whom the Chinese question is remitted. SHIPPING. Sydney, April 20. H.M.s. Swinger has arrived at Newcastle from Auckland. Newcastle, April 20. Sailed : Barques Sophia R. Luhrs for Wellington, and Belle Isle for Dunedin.
