[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. A charge against James Madden, expublican, for obtaining £1 by means of false pretences, was dismissed. A petition to have him adjudicated a bankrupt was granted. The fishermen's huts on Petone Beach have been robbed, and the men's watches and a small amount of silver taken.
Westpokt, Monday. At the local option poll the vote was in favour of an increase of all licenses. About a dozen new hotels will be established and probably a second brewery also. Grexmodth, Monday. Thomas Paynes, for many years county clerk for the Grey county, was found dead at his private residence this morning. Hβ was sitting in a chair by the fire. The supposed cause is apoplexy. Curistchurch, Monday. The Minister of Lands leaves for Wellington to-morrow. Dunkdin, Monday. The local option poll for Dunedin district took place to-day, and resulted in a very Large majority against any increase of licenses. Only one-seventh of the ratepayers on the roll recorded their votes. Invercargilia, Monday. 1 The Premier and the Hon. Mr. Fergus arrived to-night, and were interviewed by the borough council on some local matters. Mr. Fergus visits bis constituency before returning to Dunedin.
