THE BELLINGER INQUIRY. Waitara, March i 2.— The inquiry re the Bellinger was resumed to-day. Captain Benson was examined, and denied that the mate called him at four a.m., and also denied that he was drunk. His evidence consisted chiefly of a total denial of the statemeuts of the other witnesses. After the vessel struck the first time, and was making water, he headed her for Waitara, which he hoped to reach in time to get inside before the vessel filled, failing that ne would get on the sandy beach to the south. The water made too fast, and put the fires out, so he had to run her on the nearest land. He denied that he had ever left the deck in charge of George Johnson, but always came on deck or the bridge to relieve watch. One sailor also gave evidence. The inquiry resumes tomorrow.
