WHAREORA SPORTS.
Thje second annual picnlo and sports in connection with the Whareora Public School took place on Monday, 2nd January, on Mr. Finlayaon Smith's farm, kindly lent for the occasion. The day was beautifully fine, with a pleasant breeze from the south-west, which cooled the rays of a hot sun. School children, parents, and friends gathered in good numbers on the banks of the beautiful river that runs through Mr. Smith's property. At half-past eleven o'clock operations began for making tea and other refreshing drinks to add to the rich things kindly provided by the ladies to satisfy the inner man of old and young, met to wish each other a " bright and happy new year," and enjoy a holiday after the toil and labour of another year gone by. After everyone had freely partaken of the good things laid before them, games of different kinds and sports commenced, and were carried out with great zest until half-past four p.m. The following is the programme of sports, with results Fi.at Race, 150 yds, for boys over 12.— Smith, 1; J. S. Donaldson, 2; W. Donaldson, 3.

Flat Race, 300 yds, for married men, got up by the ladies.—Max D. King, 1: T. Whitelaw, 2 ; F. H. Tippett, 3. Flat Rack, 300 yds, for unmarried 1 adieu, Miss L. Dent, 1; Miss Smith, 2; Mins Dent, 3. High Jumping, for boys over 12.— Smith, 1; R. Donaldson, 2. Three-legged Rack, for boys over 12. —F. Smith and A. Dent, 1; W. Donaldson and N. Clotworthy, 2. . This brought the sports to* close, when Messrs. Donaldson and Smith handed sweets round. At half-past four p.m. the ladies had tea ready, and; having been refreshed, the gathering began to go to their homes, "having thoroughly enjoyed the first Monday in 1888, whioh will be remembered by many. Mr. Aiey distributed the prises, and all are heartily thanked for their assistanoo in making the affair a auccese.—{Own Correspondent.!
