BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Board of Edu. tion was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present Messrs. S. Luke (in the chair), Carr, Upton, Lennox, and Udy.

Chairman's Report.—Tenders had been invited for roofing the teachor's house at Pukekohe West, and for roofing school and teaoher's house at Pukerimu. The promise of a grant to the proposed school at Cabbage Bay had been withdrawn by the Government. The lists of books submitted by the committee for East and West Sohool librarian were approved. The Otara committee re* ported the school closed for three weeks cm account of whooping cough, A number of temporary arrangements of teachers which had been made were enumerated. The report was adopted. • Training College.-—'The Visiting Com* mittee of the Auckland Training College forwarded their report. They recommended that permission be granted to the students of the Training College to attend Professor Brown's lectures on experimental science for teachers preparing for the examination in Class D. Report adopted. Tahkke.—Tenders for the sohool building at Tmheke were received as follows J. Maokereth, £135 10s ; G. Wooller, £171 9a; J. Summerell and Co., £179; Mills, £179 ; Jones and O'Conor, £179 10s; A. Robb, £185; H. C. Small, £189 ; Maugham and Co., £197 16s; F. Duder, £210;; estimate, £200. It was decided to defer the matter for a week, pending decision as to site, the two lowest deposits being held over. Auckland City.—Mr. Gorrie, the chairman of the city schools committee, wrote returning the plans submitted by the Board for the proposed new Bohool in Napierstreet, along with a third plan designed by a member of the committee, which they have agreed to recommend for adoption. In their opinion the third plan was much the best, and they intimated their willingness to wait on the Board and explain. The Board decided to receive the deputation, and Mr. Gorrie and Mr. Batty accordingly came in and explained the plan. The ease with which the headmaster could reach any part of the school, and the easy exit for the ohildren was pointed out. Mr. Sullivan, the Inspector, was also called in to give his opinion of the plan. It was finally decided to defer the matter for a week, and refer it to the inspectors for their consideration. HamiltoN West.—L. Pasco wrote from Hamilton, forwarding a cop; of a letter from the Minister of Education, in which he abated that the Board of Education was the fin* court of appeal in any case in whioh a pure thought a master had exceeded his duty j. but, in his own opinion, he did not think irregular attendance a sufficient reason for expulsion. Letter received. Mack? West. — The Manka West committee wrote that they could not pay halfcost of painting school building. Deoided to call for tenders for the work.

Nbwton.—The Newton committee wrote complaining fo the quality and amount of the scoria supplied to West School. Decided to pay for the amount actually delivered.

Ohinkmtjei — Ohlnemari committee wrote asking for a ({rant for repairs to Paeroa teacher's house, £5 was granted for repairing house and half-cost of fence. Fabawai.—The Parawai committee asked for a grant for repairs to school closets. £8 granted. Ababimct.—The Ararimu school committee wrote, oomplaining of the Board's action in deciding on the expulsion of Andrew Phelan from the sohool. Letter received, and de« oided to take no farther action.

Tausanga. — Ihe Tau.rr.nga committee wrote, asking for the plans of the new sohool building to be forwarded to them for consideration and inspection. Decided to forward the plans. Whangamabino.—F. Hubbard wrote on behalf of the residents in this district asking the Board to re-consider their decision against the erection of a school. Decided to wait for further information as to the best sites.

Whabeoba.The committee of this district wrote asking for the erection of a new school, as the present building was no longer available. Decided that the Board oould not afford to build a school for such a small number of children (16).

Mahgawai.—Mr. Neil Campbell wrote on behalf of the people of Tara asking for a school for the district. Deferred for farther information.

Kaitaia.The chairman of the K&it&id, School Committee forwarded a letter from Mr. Subritzky giving the attendance at the Awanui native school. Deferred pending a reply from the Education Department.
