Wellington, Friday. The total amount collected on behalf of the fund for sending Hearn Go Sydney now amounts to about £170, and this will be increased by additional amusements, which are being arranged. Hearn expects to leave foi Sydney about November 7. A cottage situated on the Karori Road, occupied by Luke O'Conor, dairyman, and his family, was burned down early this morning. Little was saved. The building was insured in the Equitable Company, but the oontents were uninsured.
It has been deoided to erect a home for the aged needy, the contract price being £3616. At the Magistrate's Court this afternoon, Alfred Robin and Alfred Wore fold, clerks in the employ of the Gear Meat Company, were committed for trial on a, charge of alleged embezzlement of money belonging to the firm.
Hokitika, Friday. At the Supreme Court to-day tie Kumara miners' case was concluded, the plaintiff pelting nominal damages on each count. An injunction to stop sluicing into the Teremakau and Arahura rivers will bo granted unless the Government proclaim the rivers watercourses for the deposit of tailings/ Proceedings have been delayed till Monday, awaiting a reply. The Chief Justice was very severe on the Legislature for the present state of the law with regard to the question, saying that fresh legislation waß the only way out of the difficulty, caused through thf negligence and bungling of the authorities. Dunkdin, Friday. One of the crew of the barque Pet, a Norwegian named Lars Larson, aged 30, died one day before she arrived in Port. He had evidently been drinking before joining, and is said to have been injured on the Chinese Empress, a vessel on which he worked before
