THE ROBBERY ON BOARD THE ARAWA.

The robbery on board the direct steamer Arawa, of which briof information was conveyed by cable the other day, occurred on April 2, within five days' sail of Tasmania. A concert waa being given in the evening, and between eight and nine p.m. Mrs. Bertha Elser, of Capetown (passenger fpr Melbourne) left her cabin to attend it. She forgot to take the keys out of her trunk, and on returning diicovered that large quantities of jewellery had been etolen. Mrs. Elser was but recently married, and tbe trinkets were mostly wedding presents, and of more than ordinary value. Among them was a pair of diamond eairrings worth £80, five rings, two ohains, brooches, lockets, etc., besides fifteen sovereigns and a draft for £45. All the articles were contained in the jewel case. The detectives came on board! at Hobarfc, and searched all the stewards and some suspected passengers, but nothing was found. No secresy was observed, and plenty of time was given for the thief to secrete the goods. JNo one was arrested, and no clue whatever was obtained to the culprit. The police were informed of the passengers who quitted the ship at Hobart, in case the robber got off there.
