AUCKLAND SOCIETY OF ARTS.

A large number of the pictures are now being hung up in the Art Gallery, and the exhibition promises to be the moat successful in number and quality of exhibits that has yet taken place. The Society of Arts have , awarded a special prize to Mies Mary Morton, for landscape study, direct from nature, in oil. The special prize for wood engraving to Thomas Spurgeon, and the prize for mechanical drawing from specifications to Alfred J. Withy. The exhibition will be opened tomorrow (Thursday) evening with a members' conversazione, to which only members and their friends will be admitted, and the public opening on the following day. The catalogue of the exhibition this year takes "anew departure," and is itself a work of art. In addition to the ordinary letterpress there aro 40 lithographed sketches of the leading pictures in the exhibition, executed by artists in the Herald's lithographic establishment. Those of the pictures marked with an asterisk have been drawn from transfer pages by the authors of the pictures themselves. This will be a pleasing novelty, and will aid the visitors to the Gallery in their inspection of the pictures. The frontispiece or oovei- is a fine specimen of lithography. There are nine "workinge" of colours in the cover to get in the delicate tints. At the top of the page, m the centre, is a view of the Free Public Library and Art Gallery, flanked by portraits of Mr. J. T. Mackelvio, who has been so great a benefactor to the city in art treasures, and Dr. Campbell, the founder oE fche Free Arc classes. In the centre of the marginal border on either side is the monogram of the society, while the monogrem of "E.C. , ' at the bottom of the page is that of Edward Costley. The harmony of colour is very noticeable and pleasing, and showß convincingly that in this olass of work there is no necessity to send out of the country for its execution, as local talent and local workmanship are equal to the occasion.
