ST. BENEDICT'S FIRE.

TO THE KDITOK. , Sir,—Your report of a brief interview between Bishop Luok and the Mayor of Auckland, poses as an eye-opener before the public. Your correspondents in to-day 'a issue seem to have been entirely ignorant of the position a Protestant holds in regard to a Roman Catholic from a Roman standpoint, up to the time of Bishop Luok's cold-blooded admission. I suppose there are few, if any, persons in the oity who do not regret the destruction of suoh valuable property as St. Benedict's Chnrch ; but I consider the sympathy reported to have been expressed by Bishop Cowie is entirely beyond reason, and I wish to enter a protest against Bishop Cowie's right to write sympathising with those whom he oonsiders "are separated in the Faith," and to declare that the sentiments expressed in the letter are not the sentiments of Protestants as a body. As a citizen he has a right to do so, but a cautious and judicious man holding suoh a position in the Protestant Churoh would not have done so. In fact, in doing so he has gone unnecessarily out of his way to show the cloven foot. I shall be glad, therefore, to see a letter in your columns over the Bishop's signature stating that his sympathy as expressed is only a personal sympathy, and entirely apart from the Church to whioh he professedly belongs.— I am, &c., Savini.
