[press association.] Gisboene, Friday. The Supremo Conrt wae occupied all day yesterday, and until one a.m. this morning, in the case of Canada and another v. Read Trustees and the New Zealand Native Land* Settlement Company. Plaintiffs claimed by purchase a valuable interest in the Matawhero No. 1 Block, near Gisborne. A special jury found, on all issue?, in favour of the plaintiff. A motion to argue question of legality of the constitution of the Harbour Board came before the Conrt, bat the Chief Justice, without hearing argument for the defence, declared the Board legally conati tuted. Napier, Friday. A large sawmill at Ormondville, belonging to Lycett and Cross, was totally destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. Ik is thought there must have been fire smoulder, ing in the aawdnst, and m strong braaae canned it into a flame. The insurances are : Union, £250 ; Norwich, £160. Westpobt, Friday. Captain Riley, of this town, has ordered a steel tug steamer from England. Ehs will be pat together in Westport. Christchurch, Friday. The IJ.M. to-day gave judgment in favour of the defendant in a claim for expenses aa witness in a suit for judicial separation. The suit was. not successful. The present claim was brought against the husband, although the witnesses were the wife's.

Dunedin, Thursday, The Premier was present at the annual breaklng-up of the Boys' High School today. The rector stated that the Board of Governors, after consultation with him* would make a new departure next year. The attempt was to create a distinctly modem school. The modern side in the older schools had been crowded by incompetent idlers and dances, bat it would be necessary now to exact from that class as much hard, serious, and energetic work as if they were studying Latin and Greek. The Premier said if the colony waa to prosper it must have more education at whatever coat. J. R. Soott was dux of the school, taking the governors' gold medal. William Bkitco, a publican, was fined £10 and costs, £4 Bs, for tampering with a oor. poration gas meter by inserting a pipe and so carrying the gas he was using past the meter. , , . Friday. A deputation ■ waits upon the Premier tomorrow to bring under his notice the hardship imposed on freeholders of small township sections in being debarred from applying under the homestead system. ■ , The captain of the South Dunedin Volun* teere, being of opinion that many of the members of, his company were not desirable members, called upon about twenty men t* resign, and hand iu their arms. The Roslyn Borough Council have resolved to impose a special rate of 3d in the pound, ini order to comply with the demand of the Charitable Aid Board for their contribntione.
