[PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Thursday At a well-attended public meeting in the Theatre Royal to-night, called to express dissatisfaction with the internal management of the Hawke's Bay police force, resolutions were passed expressing the opinion that the manner in which the members of the force were treated by their superior officer had become a public scandal, and calling on the department to hold an exhauetive public inquiry. One of the sneakers made some very rough remarks on Sir G. Whitmore. The Hon. Mr. Ballance inspected Awatere land yesterday with a view to establishing » village settlement. The non-commissioned officers of the Rifle Volunteer Association presented Lieutenant Cbilken last night with a handsome sword in recognition of his long and arduous services to the company, and devotion to the cause of volunteering. There was a large gathering of volunteers on the occasion, and, in the coarse of the evening, speeches were made condemning very severely the ammunition supplied by the Government from the Auckland Cartridge Factory. Wellington, Thursday. It is proposed to establish a metropolitan show, similar to those held in other large centree. A public meeting will probably be called shortly. If the project succeeds Johnsonville, five miles from the Manawatu line will be selected for the eite. The City Council half-yearly accounts show a balance, £2000, of revenue over expenditure* Mr. Hart Ady has been returned Mayor of Greytown unopposed. The police intend strictly enforcing the Employment of Females Act. A man named Nicholson, who was thrown out of a buggy at Masterton a few days ago, has succumbed to his injuries. Chbistchukck, Thursday. The second annual meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the St. John's Ambulance Association was held to-night. The report showed that six branches had been estab* liehed in various townships. The class for training ladies for nursing had been very successful, 81 having attended it. The medical men here have given their services willingly. The Hon. E. Richardson, accompanied by his private secretary, arrived in Christchurch early this morning. During the day he was engaged with Sir J. Vogel and Mr. Allan Scott, in completing arrangements in the final draft of the contract for the mid* land railway. Timaru, Thursday. A splendid specimen of Californian salmon was caught in the harbour last night by a young man catching herrings from a shoal, with a landing net. The fish weighed six pounds, and was twenty-eix inches in length. Oamaru, Thursday. The show to-day was very successful. The attendance was large, and the weather waa fine. The following took the cupe ;— Ayreshire cattle, James Gemmil; thoroughbred horses, John Henderson; meriuo sheep, Hon. M. Holmes ; Leicester sheep, Little Brothers ; Lincoln sheep, Hon. M. Holmes ; dairy produce, H. Mitchell: grain, William Meek. DrjNKDiN, Thursday. Samuel Collon, a man employed as stoker on an engine working at the Otago Heads, was to day charged at the Police court with giving tobacco to a prisoner, contrary to section 33 of the Prison Aot. The gaoler said a quantity of tobacco had been found in possession of prisoners, but they had been hitherto unable to discover how it was ob» tained. The accused admitted the charge. The Resident Magistrate said that although it was a first offence it could not be dealt with lightly, and inflicted a fine of £5. A further charge against the accused, of conveying a letter from one of the prisoners, was dismissed on a technical ground.
