WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.

[FEOM OUB OWN OOBBBSPONDKNTS.]

Hamilton, Thursday. The quarterly meeting of the Anglo* Catholic Church congregation was held last night, when the churchwardens brought up what might be considered on the whole a satisfactory financial report. Arrangements for carrying ont the fancy fair, May-pole dances, and dramatic performances daring Christmas week, in aid of the oharoh debt; fund, were also made.

Cambridge, Thursday. The proposals made from Mr. Wells' party to their opponents, through Mr. T. B. Lewis, having fallen through, namely: that the candidates for the Mayoralty representing both parties should be withdrawn and a third candidate identified with neither be brought forward, and Mr. T. Wells having definitely retired from the contest, Major Wilson has been asked to contest the election with the remaining candidate, Mr. Gwynneth, and a requisition asking him to do so is being signed.

Ohaopo, Thursday. A nasty aooident befel Mr. Delaney, of the Ohaupo Hotel, on Tuesday. He was opening a bottle of sodawater, slapping in the stopper with the palm of his hand, wben the bottle burst, and the splintered neck of the bottle ran into his hand, inflicting a severe and ugly wound.

Tauwhake, Thureday. Some correspondence i« going on with respect to the name of this place, which ia growing up into an important little township, with its cheese and butter factory, hotel, store, and blaoksmith'a shop, owing to the confusion caused by the name of the older and neighbouring settlement of Tamahere being so like it when .written. Letters are miaaent, and the newspapers mix the two names most impartially. It has been proposed to drop the letter "n " in Tauwhare, making it plain Tawhare, but aa all native names have a derivative meaning, this wonid be a great mistake. A far better plan would be to give the township the name of the district—Taharoa, and thus preserve a per* feot and most euphonious native name, or else to give it some entirely new name of European origin.

[BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORBESFONDENTS.I Cambkidgk, Thursday evening, A very painful accident happened to Master Charles Soutter on the Cambridge publio eohool ground this afternoon. It appears that several boys were racing about the grounds, when Master Soutter fell, and rolled over the brow of the hill at the baok of the sohool, falling on a broken glass bottle, which inflicted a nasty wound on hin thigh. The lad was carried home by his companions, where he was attended by Dr. Moon, who dressed his wound. The lad is a son of Mr. J. L. Soutter.

A decided improvement has been affected in Duke-street by the outting down of a number of trees abutting ou the footpath opposite Mr. Hughes'. The late Town Board some months ago made application to the owners of the property to have this necessary work done.

It is understood that Major Wilson will not stand for the mayoralty, and the question may now be considered practically settled in favour of Mr. Gwynneth.
