THE PROPOSED CHANNEL IN SHOAL BAY.
TO THE EDITOH. Sib, —The very excellent report from the engineer to the Harbour Board proves to me that the oanal up Shoal Bay to the Lake can easily be made ; but I beg to differ from him in reference to the ooet—viz., £12,000, although I am not an engineer, I roughly estimated it at £6000 to £7000, but 1 have consulted eome authorities, and they tell me about £5000 would be the cost. Any business man who has a knowledge of the locality will allow that it ia a first-class speculation either for a company or a capitalist, provided the tolls up to a certain rate and up to a certain time are allowed to reimburse them for the loan. All this could be easily arranged by the Harbour Board, and they would be benetitting thousands of our citizens by giving cheap fares and a good outing for at least six months of the year. It is only a matter of time, for this spot will be the watering plaoe of Auokland.—l am, &0., M. T. Olayton. Auckland, 3rd Nov., 1886.
