Colonel Whitmore was entertained at dinner by the volunteer officers of the district on Saturday night. Accompanied by Colonel Bailey and Major Webb he leaves for the West Coast, thence to Christchurch. Blenheim, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court Justice Richmond sentenced two lads, Barker and Harvey, to two years, for horse stealing and forgery. He remarked that he did not believe in the reformatory influences of police surveillance ; but as responßible people were willing to take charge of the boys, he would report to the Government on their case, in which there were technical difficulties in the way of adopting the Probation Act. The Board of Education has passed a resolution approving of the suggestion of the Otago Board, that inspectors be interchanged between districts. Constant reference was made by members of the Board to the continued school troubles in Blenheim, as showing the need of a change in the system of inspecting. Christohukch, Tueaday. In the case of G. W. Ell, which came before the Bankruptcy Court to-day, it waa stated that the interest on a debt contracted some time ago for a loan for less than £200 had brought the amount to £5128, for which sum Mr. J. S. Woaton, executor for the late H. E.. Nathan, claimed against the estate. The Diocesan Synod closed its session this evening. The Primate, in hia concluding remarks, regretted that there had been a tendency to look too much at financial matters, while the spiritual interests of the diocese had been rather left out of sight. Timard, Tuesday. A young man named Richard Dale, said to be one of a gang of Sydney speelera, was committed for trial to-day for the robbery of £40 from the person of Robert Rennie, coal miner, of Brunnerton, on or about the 28th October. Dunedin, Tuesday. In a case in which a man was sued for an overdue newspaper account, in which the question was disputed as to whether he had countermanded the paper, three Judges refused him leave of appeal on the ground that they wished to discourage litigation.
