THE WRECK OF THE MAWHERA.

THE VESSEL TO BE GOT OFF. [by telegraph,—press association.] Greymouth, Monday. Captain Bendall, surveyor for the underwritere, leaves Wellington to-day torrepotr t upon the wreck of the s.s. Mawhera. The Union Company are Bending appliances sufficient to protect the hull from the effect of the waves. When this is accomplished, the steamer will be placed on the ways, and launched into the river. The vessel has not altered her position since she went ashore, except that she lies at a greater angle to the pea. All the cargo was landed in good condition early on Saturday afternoon, except Borne kerosene on deck, which was jettisoned. The crew and officers have left the vessel, and only the watchman ia on board. The weather is very fine. A preliminary inquiry into the lose of the Mawhera commenced before the Oollecto r of Customs today. Seven ..witnesses were examined, and voluminous evidence taken. It js the intention of the Colleotor of Customs to apply to the Government for a formal investigation before a Resident Magistrate and one or more nantical assessors. At a committee meeting of the Harbour Board to-day it was resolved to ask the Government to grant a magisterial inquiry into the lose oi the Mawhera.
