TE AROHA.
On Saturday afternoon there was a good muster of rowing men at the river to take part in some matches that had been arranged daring the week. The first race was between Messrs. Praser and Cooks and Randolph, and resulted in a victory for the firstnanied. The second was a sculling match between J. Johnson and M- Manigay, from Dibsell's landing to the punt above the bridge, a distance of over a mile up stream. This was a good race, but Johnson eventually won by about four lengths. A most exciting matoh followed, between T. Tierney and J. Potts over the same course, and in the same boats. From first to last the competitors kept well together, and at the finish there was a desperate struggle, Tierney winning by less than half a length. A four-oared gig race, in boats manned by Messrs. Menziea, Gordon, Quinlan, and Lawrence, with Frnzer as coxswain, and Messrs. Brigham, Burgess, Pavitt (junior), and Whitehouse, with Everitt as steersman, was the concluding event. The course was from the Omaha pah to the punt, a distance of over two miles up stream. This was also a well-contested match, and resulted in the first'named crew winning by about three boat lengths. Another matoh between Tierney and Potts, for £10 a-side, is likely to come off shortly, and the two last-named crews will probably try conclusions again next Saturday. Much interest is at present being taken in aquatic sport, and the river is likely for a time to take the place of the crioket field. A transfer of the license for the old Robin Hood Hotel from W. H. Ritoheson (deceased) to Mrs. Annie Thomson, was granted by the licensing committee on Saturday. A strong south-easterly gale blew all Sun* , day night, but no damage is reported.—[Own Correspondent.] ' ,
