FOOTBALL.
BEEF V. 3EER. The return football mutch between teams represeneing the butchering and brewing interests of the city was played at Diiworth'e paddock yesterday afternoon, and resulted in a win for Beef by 11 points to 4, thus giving t'he teams a win each. A large num. ber of spectators were present. Beer die. played their banner, which ia black and gold, and emblazoned with a tankard and other eml blems of Bacchus. The knights of the cleaver were captained by J. W. Gray, while Macia.tosh filled a like position for the represents tives of beer. In the first term Shove and Curtis each uuoceeded in scoring a try for Beef, one of which was converted into a goal, Sutcliffe potted a goal from the field for Beer, making tbe score seven points to four, Near the end of the second term Sandall and Garrett increased Beef'a score by a try eaoh, A goal was kicked from one of the tries, but it was disallowed, as one of the represents tivee of Beer touched the ball before it crossed the bar. When time was called the customary cheers brought the match to a conclusion, and ths teams returned to town in their drags. The winners paraded np and down Queen-street prior to the dinner. Both teams dined together in the Hobson Hotel, where a first* rate repast was served, and it is needless to say, all did full justice to it after the exertions of the day. Subsequently a Dumber of toasts were proposed, and drank wiish enthusiasm. AUCKLAND RUGBY UNION. A meeting of the delegates of the Auckland Rugby Union was held in the clubroom, Imperial Hotel, last night, to consider the advisability ot continuing the olub matches or playing two deciding matches between the three clubs leading for the senior cup. There was a large attendance, and Mr. Cotter presided. There was a good deal of discussion on the question. Mr. Arneil moved, seconded by Mr. Dixoa, "That the propraiiime of the matches be carried out." An amendment to abandon the matches wail moved by Mr. Clayton, seconded by Mr. Jordan. The motion was carried on a division of 9 votes to 8, and the cup matohee will, therefore, be continued. - SATURDAY'S MATCHES. Newton v.
