COMMERCIAL.

- ■ ■»' Nitw Zealand Hebald OUioe. Thureday evening. THE Customs receipts amounted to i.".)!> Vis. Occasional signs of improvement uotue in a fitful intermittent sort of way over the commercial position, but there is no sustained recovery, and in some particular branches trade in in * bad way. There is move animation and buttle brought about by the fine weather, and tho dulnees more or less complained of by the distributing hounos, is poih»pe partly accounted for by the unual disinclination to purcluso at the close of the month. The island requirements per the Maile and Janet Niccoi have materially helped the weekV business in imported goods. Certainly tho buyers have rarely had such favourable quotations us are now ruling in most lines of general merchandise. Really firm and advancing prices arc fined to leas than a dozen lines in tho fall ist of commodities. There has been a steady upward movement in fine salt. Strong inquiries arc coming from the South. As usual in thin market, it is either a feast or a famine. When an article gets plentiful, no one orders, and when scarce, the cable is at once used to expedite supplies. A glut is the consequence. The keenness to seize on an apparently safe spec is equally shared by all importers, and the smartness of individual speculators is neutralised by the common action of the whole. Fairly large transactions have taken place in woolpttcks, on which there has been a remarkable advance in Australia, principally for spot delivery. Evidently largo supplies are afloat, for the quotations for October delivery are at a large reduction on stock prices. Hugar remains with very little change. The market is weak. Keports from Fiji give the late crushing as, in round numbers, 19,000 tons, out of which the Colonial Sugar Co. and the New Zealand Sugar Co. export 15,000, leaving a balance of 4000 tone, only half of which is available outside the big companies, as 2000 tons in the estimated requirement for the Fiji home trade. Salmon is firm at Ss for Cocktail, and 7s Oil to 7i 9d for lower brands. Table fruits are coming into more notice, and trade sales during the week have been made freely. The last mail advices have firmed up prices. The prospects of a move in galvanised iron are a little better. Many dribbling orders are coming in from outside places.

In fencing wire the great competition from Germany has forced tho principal English makers to lower tho price 10s per ton. Load business is active, and good orders are coming from Poverty and Mawke's Bay. The enolosure of sheep rune now going on thore vigorously. 15 tons of pearl shell, ex Sybil, has beea sold privatoly at £50 per ton. In the grain market, maize is not worth more than 3s. Feed oats may be quoted at 2m 7d to 52a 9d ; seed ditto, 3i. Wheat is in strong demand at 5s to 5s 6d for milling samples ; chick wheat Iβ unobtainable—nominally it is worth 4s (id. Potatoes aro firming; the price depends upon quality, and varies trom £4 to £5. We observe that values in Tasmania are rapidly rising, that market being a good barometer to study in this particular produce. In butter and eggs wo havo no alteration to report. Butter rcmaiuit at 8d per lb wholesale, and lOd per lb retail. Eggs are very plentiful, and prioes may be accepted as only nominal. We quote them at 7d per duzen wholesale, and 9 J per dozen retail. v Tho flour market remains at last* weok's r;uotations, and business is chiefly contiued to the supplying of immediate wants. Mesors. B, Tonke and Co., sold yeeterday the equity of redemption of the property anil promUeu lately in tho occupation of Mr. it. oievonson, in Newton ltoad, subject, firatly, to a life annuity of £36 per annum, und also ;i mortgage of £1000, and tho sum of £25 for £xtures. The sum realised for the property under these conditions was £500, and the purchaser was Mr. A. IS. Thompson.

KAURI GUM MAIiKET. Latest advices of tho Ist ot August show London stocks on that date as 1313, against 1401 tone on the same date laet year; and tho Huipmentn being small, stocks there will ere long be lighter, unless,-: on the first signs of London's recovery, American holders relieve the overstocked New York market by transhipping thence to London. But there are, so far, no aigns of revival in either of these markets. In Auckland, on tho contrary, there has during the last six weoks been a oousiderable advance in prioe of fair ordinaries, the demand being fully equal to, if not greater tlnn, the supply of ordinary gum. During the current week buyers have not appeared ao active, but this may in a measure be due to some of the batiks having their half-yearly balance to-day, and wo look for no decline for a few week* to come. We, however, again warn country dealers that the recent advance in prioes is due nolnly to immediate pressing requirements, and thut a sudden fall may take place before the end of October. Gum coming under the head of superior ordinary ie always difficult to quota, Wβ

cannot absolutely ignore this quality id our reports, and yet were we to state the very highest figure to which some small lots of this sort reach, wo would only mislead diggers and country dealers, as each holder is apt to fancy hiii gum comes under this category, which would lead to lose and general dissatisfaction. Eaist Coast gem, for reasons stated in our last report, is neglected, and though we believe a» high as 55s has; been paid for one line, parcels arriving on the open market are dull of sale, at from 50s to 53i. Supplies for September are about 360 tons. We quote :~Poor ordinary, aCM-ce, 30s upwards ; fair ordinary, 40a to 4ls; euperior ordinary, from 42s to 46j for special lots ; East Coast, 50a to 555.
