We learn that the Harbour Board have made arrangements for placing a sailing master in charge of the dredger to-day, in tho room of Captain McGillivray, who retired from the command last evening. The now master (Simons) will act until suoh time ae will nnable the dredger master to prepare himself for examination for a master's river certificate, and thus qualify him to take chargo of tho dredger. The Union Co.'e s.s. Tarawera took her departure for Southern ports and Melbourne yesterday at noon sharp. By her St. Leon's Circus Company were passengers to Hobart, and ae the steamer backed out from the wharf the circus band struck up a number of lively airs, which they played whilst the vessel proceeded down tho harbour. The s.s. lona, from Taurnnga and Mercury Bay, came into harbour yeeterday morning witb cargo and passengers, and at 8 o'clock left again for the Great Barrier. From there she returns this morning early, and this evening is to leave Bgain for Tauranga. The a.%. Glenelg, from Mangonui, came into harbour yesterday afternoon with a cargo of 83 head of cattle, which were landed at Kohimarania. She is to leave again early this morning for the same port for another oargo of live stock. The ship Waitangi, Captain Leeman, entered outwards at the Customs yesterday for London. This evening the s.s. Janet Nicoll is to leave on her usual trip round the islands of the south seas.

• The brigantine Maria Virginia, from Newcastle, arrived oil the North Head at an early hour this morning, with a full cargo of coal. She left Newcastle on the 14th September, and had variable weather throughout. The brigantine will come up harbour to-dsy, and be berthed at tho Railway Wharf to land her cargo. To-day the steaming Awhina—with Captain McGillivray as pilot—takes up the pilot service. The Awhina is to do the servioe, receiving as payment all the pilotage feos that may be obtained from vessels usiug a pilot. The three-masted schooner Energy, from Mercury B.iy, arrived off the North Head yesterday morning. The schooner is en route to Brisbane, but has put into this pore to enable Captain Savory to visit his father, who, we regret to learn, is in a very critical state of health. Should circumstances require it, Captain Norris is to proceed on with the Energy to Brisbane. The brigantine Eillan Donan should arrive here to-day from the Thames. The brigantine is on her way to Brisbane, but comes hero for the purpose of obtaining the spars, gear, etc., for the schooner Sovereign, which is await, ing them at Brisbane. The spare for tho Sovereign have been made by Messrs. Sims and Brown, the sails by Captain D. H. Mackenzie, and the ironwork by Mr. Thomas Inglis.
