DEVONPORT BOROUGH ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, Allow me to state in reply to the letter of "Fair Play" in this morning's is.'ue that he has either discovered a mare's nest, or he is purposely endeavouring to hoodwink the electors to serve his own ends, and haß therefore no right to the name he assumes. There is no blue ribbon organisation in Devonport, consequently it cannot bring its influence to bear on the election or issue a ticket. The only temperance organisation likely to make itself felt in an election is the Devonport Temperance Electoral Committee, formed for the specific parpose of watching the interest of the ratepayers on the licensing question, and to bring forward candidates for the licensing committee, who will study the true interest of the district, and not that of a selfish olique. Municipal matters do not coma within its scope, and there is no intention to issue such a ticket as " Fair Play " hints at. He need not therefore be afraid of being made a tool of by the Temperance party. Lot him take care he is not being made a tool of by a less respectable party, if indeed he be not one of them. I quite agree with " Fair Play's " remark that it behoves the ratepayers of Devonport to consider carefully the qualifications of the various candidates, and I would add that their public acts in the past should be considered as well.—l am, &0,, W. Mitchell, Sec. Devonport Temperance Electoral Committee. Devonport, sth June, 1836.
