The Union Co.'s steamship Manapouri came into harbour yesterday morning early from Russell, and at 12.30 she loft again for Southern ports and Melbourne. The s.s. Wellington, from Tauranga, and Argyle, from Mercury Bay, both arrived yesterday morning. The Argyle left again at S a.m. for the Great Barrier ; and list evening the s.a. Wellington also took her departure, bound for Tauranga. Yesterday afternoon Mr. T. Hill, the Collector of Custom?, held an inquiry into the circumstances attending the standing of the schooner Gem on the reef off Motuihi. The evidence adduced showed no further information to that already published in the Herald. Yesterday morning the barque Lutterworth was berthed at the Queen-street Wharf. The tug Awhina yesterday morning took in tow tho brig Syren and the new steam yacht belonging to Mr. Featherstone. They were both taken to the Thames, the former intending to load there with timber for Brisbane, and the latter to obtain her machinery, which has been built for her by by Messrs, Price Bros. The R.M.S. Alameda is due here to-day from San Francisco, with the English and American mails. Her dates are from London to the 22nd April, and from San Francisco to the Sth May. The N.Z.S. Co.'s steamship Kaikoura is to leave at 11 o'clock this morning for Wellington and other Southern ports. The ship Hertfordshire, from Glasgow, at present discharging at Dunedin, has on board a small quantity of cargo for Auckland. This is being brought up by the s.s. Taupo, due here to-day. The many friends at this port will be pleased to learn that Captain McColl still retains command of the s.s. Paupo, the Union Company evidently being perfectly satisfied with that gentleman's action at the time of the recent grounding of the Taupo at Gisbolne. The Union S.S. Company have increased their fleet by the addition of a steamer named the Australia. This ia quite a new vessel, having been built in ISS4 at Dumbarton. She has a gross tonnage of 458 to:.B register, net tonnage 260 tons. Accommodation is provided for thirty-two saloon "and twenty steerage passengers, and should prove a great acquisition to the company. Tho Australia will, on arrival, be relegated to the trade on the Eist (-oast of this island instead of the Maitai, which will then ply between Wellington and the Weat Coast of the South Island. The brigantine Ryno, for Suwarrow, and brig Niagara for Sydney, via Whangaroa, were both entered outwards at tho Customs yesterday. The brigantine Clansman left Mercury Bay on Monday last with a cargo of timber for Melbourne, It will be noticed in our cable messages that the ship Wellington, which left Lyttelton on the 9th of March, reached London on Wednesday last, thus doing the passage in the excellent time of 78 days. We learn from Foochow, under date the 26th inst., that tho steamer Tamsui is on the berth loading for New Zealand porta. Wellington is to be her first port of call. Tho Colonial Government steamer Hinemoa left last evening for Wellington with a quantity of railway materials, two six pounder batteries, etc. The following are the Wellington pasaengors by the Tainui, which leaves fiyttelton for London on Saturday Saloon : Messrs.
