The ketch Good Templar, which recently left here for Wananaki, has been making two or three trips between that place and Whangarei. She again left the latter place yesterday for Wananaki, there to load timber for Gisborne. The schooner Energy was lying at Gisborne discharging on tho 10th instant. From there she was to proceed to a port to load for Auckland. The schooner Gisborne left Gisborne for Auckland, via East Coast ports, on the lbth instant. The schooner Waiwera, from Gisborne, arrived at Whangarei on the IS'.h instant, after ft very fair passage of three days, strong N.W. winds having prevailed from Gisborne to the East Cape, and thence strong S.W. winds across the Bay of Plenty and to arrival. Tho ■chooner is due here to-day with a cargo of coal from Whangarei. A. few days back we were advised of the arrival of the barque Alcestis at London from tho Bluff, bat next day the information was contradicted by cable from London. We learn from Messrs. Stone Brothers, the owners of the barque named, that our first information received was correct. The Aloestis was taken into the London dock on the Sth May last, and at once commenced the work of discharging. The three-masted schooner Waitemata is to lie berthed to-day to land her cargo of coal. On the completion of this work the schooner is to go round to the Kaipara, and there load anether cargo of timber fcr Sydney. As showing the good despatch obtained by this vessel, and her excellent sailing qualities, it may bo mentioned that the vessel was but 13 days out from Sydney yesterday morning. Out of that time she visited Newcastle, and obtained a cargo of over HOG tons coal. In our yesterday's issue we gave particulars of the stranding of the schooner Gem on a reef running out into the Motutapu passage from the quarantine island of Motuihi. By the return of the s.s. Argyle from the Great Barrier, at 4 o'clock yesterday morning, we learn that the schooner Gem had sunk, and all that was visible of her was a few feet of her bows and her masts. At the timo of her going ashore she was loaded with shingle ballast, and has been ascertained that she has suffered considerable injury below low-water rank. Efforts were made yesterday to float the vessel into shallow water fsom off the reef, but without success. When the s.s. Kotomah&na passed yesterday morning the Gem was still in the same condition as reported by Captain Amodeo. Tho barque Madura and brigantine Clansman ■were the only vessels loading at Mercury Bay on Thursday last. The s.s. Wellington, with cargo and passengers, arrived in harbour yesterday morning early from Russell and other Northern ports, and at 10 o'clock lant night she again left tho harbour bound for Whangarei. The barque Eato Tathnm. from Newcastle, arrived at Napier yesterday morning. The barque Examiner, also from Newcastle, reached Wellington yestorday. The barque Wenona may shortly be expected to arrive from Newcastle with a cargo of coal. The brfgantine Circe, under charter to Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlaue, is to sail today on a cruise amongst the South Sea Islands. Owing to slight repairs being needed ?o the engines of the s.s. Argyle she did not leave on her usual trip to Mercury Bay last evening. The whaling barques Swallow (Captain Mclnnis) and Horatio (Captain Morse) both left tho Bay of Islands together yesterday on a whaling cruise. PORT OF ONEHUNGA. The Oreti, being bar-bound at Wanganui, cannot arrive in time to leave to-day as advertised. Her departure is consequently postponed until '6 p.m. on Tuesday next. PORT OF KAIPARA. May 18.—Sailed : Western Star, for LauncesSon. May 19, Sailed : Pelican, for the South, and Star of tho Mersey, for Dunedin. May 20.Arrived : Magellan Cloud. * THE DEFIANCE. The brigantine Defiance made an attempt to cross the Kaipara bar on Thursday afternoon, but, tho wind heading her, she was obliged to return. In doing so sha ran on the south end of the Tory Shoals, the weather being very thick and dirty at the timo. As the tide made she floated off, but not before considerable damage was done. She ran into harbour, making water rapidly. The exact extent of damage done is not at present known. Captain McKay was in charge of the vessel, bound to Sydney. Part of the deck cargo was thrown overboard when on the shoals, and the lost her foresail. THE STAR OF THE MERSEY WATERLOGGED. By telegraph from New Plymouth we learn that yesterday the brig Star of the Mersey, bound from the Kaipara for Dunedin, was towed into New Plymouth, being in a leaking state. The crew have been taken on shore at Taranaki from the vessel. Captain Christian reports that the vessel was from Kuipara to,

1 Dunedin. - She sprang a leak on Thursday afternoon In her bow, and being unable to keep the water down with the pumps, it was decided to run for New Plymouth for shelter. She bad eight men on board, and, although pumping all night, the water so increased that the vessel became waterlogged and unmangeable. The captain then hoisted a fUg of distress, which was seen from the shore, and the harbourmaster in the tugboat went out to their aid. The captain and mon were thoroughly exhausted, and say ' that, but for the New Plymouth harbour they J' would have been lost. On arrival two anchors ' were put out, but tho vessel is drifting towards ' tho shore owing, to the {jeavy sea on. They abandoned tho vessel. She has a cargo of timber for the Dunedin Wood Company. The [• captain is part owner, but declined to say what insurance is on the vessel. Tha Star of the [, Mersey is a wooden brig of 253 tons register, built at Hylton, Durham, in 1563, and her registered owner is Mr. C. L. Hodge, of Dunedin. i THE BRIGANTINE DEFIANCE IN DISTRESS. [from cub own correspondent. 1 ; Helensvillk, Friday. The brigantine Defiance sailed yostorday afternoon for Sydney, but had to roturn. In doing so she ran on the south end of the Tory Shoals. The tide floated her off, and Bhe came into harbour much damaged, and is making wator rapidly. t ARRIVAL OF THE KAIKOURA. [by telegraph—press association.] Port Chalmers, Friday. , The R.M.s.s. Kaikoura arrived at 8 a.m., and her mails were immediately transhipped to boats in waiting on her. It was intended to have landed the Wellington passengers to allow the vessel to proceed direct to Auckland, but a wind arose, and this course was not deemed prudent, and the vessel will call at Wellington. Tho Kaikoura's passage from Plymouth, including detention, occupied 39 days ISh 46min, her actual steaming timo being 39 days 111 llituin. She has 179 passengers, whoso health has been good. One birth occurred on the passage, but no deaths. Tho officers of the vessel are unchanged. The Kaikoura was hova-to for twelve hours on March 11, otherwise the passage was devoid of incident.
