Heavy rains last night and to-day brought down a number of logs, estimated at 1200, to the Shortland Sawmills. \ Helensville, Friday. Very heavy rain fell all last night, and still continues. It will be much appreciated by those having locs locked up in the creeks for the want of sufficient water to bring them down to the booms. > Tauraxga, Friday. Arthur J. Vogan, artist to the Geographical Society's late New Guinea expedition, delivered an interesting lecture last night, under the auspices of the directors of the Mechanics' Institute, on "New Guinea, and the Operations of the Late Expedition. Mr. Brabant, R.M., presided. There was a large attendance. The lecturer exhibited a col* lection of weapons, ' utensils, ornaments, earrings of natives, and sketches and photographs illustrative of New Guinea scenery. Mr. Vogan stated he would leave in November next as a member of a fresh expedition to be sent out by the New South Wales Government, or by it and the Queensland Government jointly.
