[BY XUJCOSAPB. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Monday. A deputation from the University Council waited on Mr. Larnach to-day re the School of Mines. They pointed out that since the the withdrawal of the Government subsidy of £500 matters were not in a very satisfactory state. Mr. Larnach made a suggestion that the Council should transfer Professor Clrich's services to the Government, who would . have him stationed at Wellington as Head Inspector of Mines, the department to be under the Minister of the day. ■ Perhaps schools- of mines would be started in other plaoM like the Thames, to Government to subsidise £1 for evnry £1 subscribed. Professor Olrich could direct the central Mining Museum, and his services would be available when required. The Counoil agreed to the idea, and the Minister promised to submit the matter to the Cabinet. At » meeting of the committee of the Thames School of Mines Association, a communication from the Minister of Mines was read to the effect that no promise had been given of a subsidy, but he considered Mr. Montgomery's salary equivalent to one. He would, however, place an amount as subsidy on the next estimates. It was resolved to oommenoe the classes in the Ores ham Hall on the 25th instant, the fee being 15s per quarter, credit to be given to members for the ten shillings, amount of their membership tickets.
