LORD WOLSICLKY AND THE CONTINGENT. Among the guests at the Lord Mayor's banquet at the Guildhall was Lord Wolseley. In responding to the toast of his health Lord Wolseley eulogised the physique and general conduct of the New South Wales Contingent whilst in Soudan. THE NAVIGATION OF THE If IN. The Chinese authorities have agreed to re-open the navigation of the river Min, which has been closed since the bombardment of the fort by the French last year. TftE PAYMENT OF MEMBERS. The question of the payment of Member* of the House of Commons is again being discussed publicly. The Standard contends that the adoption of the prinoiple would be inimical to the public good. Mr. Gladstone has announced that he is opposed to the general payment of Members of the Home of Commons. THE WAR IN THE SOUDAN. A rumour has gained currency to the effect that Khalifa Abdoola, who aspires to the position oi the successor of the Mahdi, has summoned a council of the native chiefs to consider whether the war. shall be coo* tinued. THE AFGHAN CRISIS. General Komaroff, commander of the Russian forces on the Afghan frontier, pro* fesses his inability to prevent another oollision between the Ruisians and Afghans, unless the latter are restrained from advancing. The Standard, in an article dealing with the statement of General Komaroff, declares that war is preferable to the present disorder and expensive uncertainty.
