THE GOLDFIELDS.

[from our own correspondent.]

Thames, Tuesday. Golden Crown.— No. 2 level a body of stringers in the footwall of No. 5 reef is being driven on, and colours of gold are seen. A few pounds of picked atone have also been obtained here. This place is the only work in progress supplying quartz, but there were several loads on hand from the chamber of No. 2 level, and the winze to No. 3. Operations were begun in two places at No. 2 level this afternoon. Driving on the main leader, from which the stringers alluded to branch, will be resumed, but it is not a great distance from the \\ aiotahi boundary. Strong gold is showing in the face. Driving on the shaft reef towards the Darwin will be commenccd. It appears to consist of two branches, comprising three or four feet of quartz. Gold is also showing in this face. At No. 3 level a cross-cut Las boon carried about fifteen feet in the direction of the \Vaiotahi main reef, which should be about ninety feet ahead. Some kindly stringers, which may correspond with those now being driven on at No. 2 level, have been passed. A formation of mullocky quartz, about two feet wide, was cut at the cornur of the chamber. It iB supposed to be the Waiotahi No. 5 reef, and driving upon it towards the Waiotahi boundary, supposed to be 90 feet away, will he commenced atonce. Amain cross-cutjia being driven to catoh the shatt reef, which should be to hand in 10 feet. Five head of stamper* are employed at present, and the crushing is payable. , Caledonian Low Level.— In the southern crosscut, the cross lode has been followed to within thirty fcot of the Waiotahi main reef. The leader is small at present, and a portion has probably been heaved. The country is very favourable for gold. The footwall of the supposed Cambria reef has been followed SO feet. It has just been cut through to the hangingwall, disclosing a body of about eight feet of quartz, eome of which ie very kindly. [*Y TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Tuesday evening.

Cambria. — Mr. R. McDonald Scott received the following telegram from the mine manager yesterday:—" lOOlbs. specimens from winze No. 3 level ; good shor/ left."

The Te Aroha News says :—lt may be not generally known that a number of reefs in the immediate vicinity of this township contain lead in large quantities, and for this reason alone may prove of very great value, more especially because a great quantity of lead has to be used in connection with the LaMonte smelting process, which has now to be imported from Engalnd at coniiderable cost.

The wholesale lockiDg up of claims on the different goldfields has frequently called forth severe strictures from the Warden. On Saturday Mr. Kenrick said he was sorry to see that at Karangahake the practice of taking up ground for the purple of simply holding it without working, was destroying the prospect which the field now seem* to have of being properly tested. He did not intend to encqurage this by granting protection too readily, for he noticed that in most instances the men who took up ground were tho3e who already hold considerable areas, and who simply wanted to increase the extent of their properties.—Thames Advertiser.
