THE REPORTED GOLD DISCOVERY IN NEW GUINEA.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN - COTIKK.-PONDr.ST. | Hamilton', Thursday. Yesterday's Herald contains a telegram from Melbourne, etating that Kerry obtained the specimens said to be found in New Guinea from Tasmania. I made it tnv business to-day to see Mr. ,J euben Kerry, his brother, of the firm of Kerry and Hibgam, fellmongere aud farmer*, of Hamilton. Mr. Kerry, who is naturally very indignant at t*ie charge mado in the Melbourno txlfgram. says that his brother arrived in Auckland from the New Guinea expedition on July 31, 1884 ; that he and other members of the family saw his brother in August at Auckland, and then saw the soecimnns ; that they were shown to several Auckland gentlemen at that time, amongst whom was, he believes, Mr. Thomas Morrin. There were, he thinks, three specimens, weighing perhaps four or five ounces each—not specimens of quartz containing gold, but of gold containing quartz, the latter being white iti colour. It was, is he "ays, utterly absurd and unnecessary for Kerry, with such rich specimens an these, to have bought others in February in Tasmania, and this absurdity shows the groundleseneee of the charge. Mr. Kerry is of opinion that his brother has gone away on tho staff of the geographical expedition, and i<) therefore unible to refute the calumnioue charge made Against him.
