VOLUNTEER ITEMS.

The monthly inspection of the four remaining rifle companies of the Auckland Garrison was held in the Drill shed last night, when there was a fine master of 214 on parade. Colonel Lyon, tho officer commanding the district, was the inspecting officer, while Major Shepherd acted as adjutant, and Instructor Wainright was oergeant-major. The parade state was as follows : —

Engineer* ; 40 rank and file, five supernumeraries and one bugler, under Lieutenants McCullough and Blmos. College Rifles : 50 rank and file and 5 supernumeraries, under Captain Sloman and Lieutenants Tonka and Houghron. Gordon Rifles ; 40 rank and file, 5 supernumeraries, and 1 bugler, under Captain White and Lieutenants Leigh and Faint. Queen's Own Rifles: 52 in the ranks and 4 supernumeraries, under Captain Keep and Lieutenants Wilkinson and Collier. The Engineers made their first appearance in their scarlet uaiforma, being the same as the Royal, Kngineers, except the cap, which is a drop peak, similar to the Gordon's cap, and encircled with a yellow band. The tunic is scarlet, with yellow facings, black cuffe, and black trousers with broad red stripes. The corps presented a soldierlike appearance. The Quei-n's Own, with the exception of the officers, were still in rnufti, their uniforms not having arrived yet from Dunedin, where they are being made. Colonel Lyon complimented the men on their performance, and at the close of the parade announced that next month, on a Saturday after the inspection, he intended to call an out-door parade of the ten leading companies, and on the following Saturday there would be a similar parade of the remaining eight companies, including those on parade last night. This will afford an opportunity of the companies, especially the new corps, acquiring some further knowledge on drill besides that gained in drillhalls, and will be the first occasion on which the new men have shown themselves in daylight upon parade to the public
