SPORTING
During the p<vst few days the name ol Mr, John Marshall's colt Thunderbolt has been persistently whispered about as a likely contestant in the forthcoming V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup, and, from what has transpired, it,would appear to be almost definitely settled that the dolt will at an early date take his departure for Australia to undergo his preparation for those races. During his two-year-old career Thunderbolt proved himself to be the best • colt of the -season for he scored no less than five successive victories, and ;iiis record has never yet been stained by i defeat. With Welcome Jack, Vanguard, Oudies, Liverpool, Winchester, and Thunderbolt to do battle on behalf of New Zealand during the forthcoming season in Australia, it must be admitted that we present a very formidable front,. and should it be our good fortune to see the horses successfully complete their preparations, we may confidently look forward to them playiiig very prominent parts. Little business has yet beeia recorded on the Great Northern Steeplechase, to be decided at Ellerslie on Saturday next, but of those engaged in that race Director is held in most esteem. I may mention that acceptances and general entries in connection with the A.R.C. Meeting are _due to-night at eight o'clock. , Phaeton.
