CONFERENCE OF VOLUNTEER OFFICERS.

A conference of adjutants and officers com« manding several volunteer districts in the colony, mot this afternoon at Government Buildings, and it is expected their sittings will extend over a week. The Conference has been appointed at the instance of the Defence Department, and comprises the following officers : —Majors Stapp, Wanganui; Butts, Wellington and Napier; and Shepherd, Auckland; Captains Webb, Nelson and Westland ; Newel), Canterbury ; and Gordon, Otsgo and Southland. The object of the Conference is to suggest amendments in the Volunteer Act and Volunteer R-gulatioDS, in order to make the latter conform to the former as nearly as possible. At present some of the regulations are ultra vires, and it is considered very desirable for the proper working of the force that amendments should be effected in them as well as in» uhe Aot under which they are formed. 0 j
