THE TOTALISATOR MACHINES.

TO THE EDITOB. \ Sib, —Your correspondent, Mr. Butler, has. acted in a very ungenerous manner in Eta ting that the machine X made was ont of' order when he took it in hand. I left the machine in perfect order on the night of January 2nd. The failure of the machine ha refers to on the first day's raaicg was through no faolt of mine. It had been tampered with and wilfully pat wrong, and took me a day to-rectify. I was not present on that day, but was informed that the machine waa not worked on that account, so .. there could be no loss fro an it. I attended on the Ist and 2nd January, and took accurate notes of the working of all three machines. On reference to these, I find that with the exception of one or two slight mistakes on the machines made by me, and not affecting the club, they were quite correct, and the only serious errors made were on the other machine. As there seem 3 on someone's part a desire to shift the responsibility from themselves, I will gi ve you particulars. On the New Year's Gift race the other machine registered on the grand total 590, while the numbers registered on each horse were 2, 267, 95, 19, 79, 13, 16 ; added together, 491. On the Grand Stand Handicap grand total shown 534, on each horse 22-4, 125, 33, 2, 24, So ; together, 493. On the Steeplechase Handicap, grand total 757 ; on each horse, 401, 122, 116, 20i 97; together, 756, The dividends were paid on the grand totals registered alter making reductions for scratched horses. In the first case mentioned'there was paid away (deducting odd money, £5 ss) the sum of £1196 ss, while it should have been (dedact- : ing odd money, £15) the sum of £1096 10s, i or £99 153 too much ; but then, as the odd ! money and commission amounted to £13° I 15s, there was no loss to the club. 1' ® I currently reported that the club have lost heavily, but I can testify that with the above exceptions, caused by a machine not made by me; the fault did not lie with to® machines. The machine I made forth® club I guaranteed for two years, ana worked perfectly. I can safely leave tns question of - defective workmanship for ~ e public to judge from the character of the work I have turned ont for- many years in Auckland.—l am, etc., Geo. W. Hesiop.
