DEFEAT OF THE MAHDI. [Received April 10, 5.30 p.m.] Cairo, April 18; Despatches are to hand-from General Gordon at Khartoum, dated, the 9fch instant. He announces that a. prominent merchant at El Obeid reports to him that the followers of the Mahdi had been recently twice defeated by a force of loyal Arabs, and that the rebels are now surrounded.. THREATENED ATTACK ON SOUAKIM. • London, April 20. Osman Digna ' has rallied two thousand men, and now threatens Souakim, when the British retire. 300 REFUGEES MASSACRED. London, April 20. It is reported that 300 refugees from Shendy have been driven on a sand bank in the Nile and massacred. DANGER OF COLONEL STEWART. London, April 20. General Gordon will probably order Stewart and Power to escape across the equator. ■ /
