MAN DROWNED IN THE HARBOUR.

Infobmation • was conveyed to ' the water police early yesterday morning that the dead body ol' a man was floating in the harbour, a Bhort distance from the end of Mr. C. Bailey's slip," Constable Mackay at once proceeded to" the spot, and with the assistance of a lad brought the body to the shore and to the • dead-house. Enquiries were at once instituted, and it was found that the body was that of Edwin Welcome, who arrived here from Taranaki on the previous Sunday, 1 and that he had been staying at a boarding-house in Turner-street. Since his arrival in Auckland, Welcome, who is described as a commission and general agent, has been drinking heavily, ancf on Saturday morning he got out of bed about five o'clock, and went out,'and that was the last seen of him until the recovery of the body yesterday morning as described. It is not definitely known whether -Welcome waa married or not, but is expected that to-day will bring full particulars of the man from Taranaki. Welcome, who was a heavy-built man, is said to be possessed of some amount of property in and about New Plymouth. As to how the unfortunate man pot into the water nothing is known, but it is presumed that he had gone down, the Queen-street Wharf, and tumbled over, and the flood tide would have carried the body to where.it was found. An inquest is to be held to-day.
